Back to Spring City

Central Middle School artists tamp guitar with local history, pride.

By Josh Perttunen – Freeman Staff

WAUKESHA – A team of seven eighth-grade girls at Central Middle School is painting details onto a 10 foot-tall fiberglass guitar, mindful of the gravity of their assignment. Their project will be just one of 15 new guitars displayed around the city of Waukesha this summer.

“We will get to remember that we worked on this every time that we pass by it,” said Cozette Hoenk.

Her classmate Juliette Martinez agreed.

“It will be a cool opportunity to grow up, possibly move away, and then come back to show our children that we did a guitar,” she said.

The young artists are painting their guitar to resemble a steamer trunk, complete with stamps that recognize many of Waukesha’s historical places circa the 1940s – when Waukesha was in its Spring City heyday.

“I like that the guitar is vintage,” Martinez said. “That it ties into the city and its history.”

This idea was one of two the girls brought forth while brainstorming, said art teacher Lisa Osvatic, who is assisting the young artists with their project.

“They wanted to do the stamps you obtain while traveling and acknowledge Waukesha’s history with its springs,” she said.

Students are in their third week of working on the project.

“I hope that they understand what a huge honor it is to be working on it,” Osvatic said. “It’s a once-ina- lifetime opportunity.”

To a girl, they never imagined they’d be working on a guitar.

“I would see them when I was out walking,” said Kate Schwerman. “I didn’t know where they came from. I thought only professionals could do them.”
The talent of these young artists led Osvatic to recruit them and they have proven to be a dedicated group, the teacher said, volunteering to work on the project after school, during lunch and while in study hall.

GuitarTown Committee seeking final approval of murals from Planning Commission

WAUKESHA – The Waukesha GuitarTown committee will be presenting the conceptual drawings that have been approved by Waukesha’s Public Art Committee at its Monday, April 15th meeting for final approval by Waukesha’s Planning Commission.  The approval is for the first five painted wall murals which are a part of Waukesha’s Gibson GuitarTown project this year.

The murals are the first in a series of murals that Waukesha GuitarTown has planned for 2013. The murals will focus on Les Paul and the history of Waukesha. They are being done by the nationally acclaimed Wall Dogs, who have done many projects around the United States.  Samples of their work can be viewed as close by as murals in Plymouth, Wisconsin. The five walls selected are all in Downtown Waukesha and will become a part of the fabric of the downtown, in the same way as the 10-foot tall guitars that are currently on Waukesha GuitarTown’s Walking Tour.

Gibson Guitar Corporation has chosen Waukesha, the birth and resting place of Les Paul, inventor of the solid body electric guitar, for an encore of its nationally acclaimed GuitarTown public arts project.  Waukesha GuitarTown this year has launched two new initiatives as a part of this year’s project: the murals that are being added to the downtown and the educational component that has been developed with educational institutions in Waukesha.

Students in the Waukesha School District from North and West High Schools, Central Middle School, Saratoga Stem School and La Casa de Esperanza will paint some of the 10-foot tall guitars as part of our encore project. Students from Butler Middle School will paint 3 playable guitars, while students from the Waukesha Catholic School System – St. Joseph campus, will paint another one of the playable Les Paul guitars.

This year the Waukesha GuitarTown project will add 15 ten-foot fiberglass guitars to the 10 already completed guitars on display for a total to 25 guitars.  These will all be featured on the Downtown Waukesha’s Guitar Walking Tour pick, which will be available at numerous locations for the public to locate the various guitars.

Waukesha GuitarTown 2013 builds on the momentum of last year and will continue to unite area businesses with the community in an effort to celebrate its cultural contributions.  It is an initiative that aims to help Waukesha achieve the goal of becoming the best small city in the United States.

Join us for the unveiling of the guitars on June 6th at a private Gala or at the public June 7th opening of Waukesha’s Summer Music series called Waukesha Freeman’s Friday Night Live.  This season will feature 7 stages of live music every Friday night from June until October.

“You Really Haven’t Seen Anything Yet”

GuitarTown artists revealed; project billed as bigger, better than last year’s

By Sarah Pryor

Freeman Staff
WAUKESHA – Last year’s Gibson GuitarTown public art project put Waukesha among the ranks of some of the biggest art and music cities in the world, but organizers are billing this year’s encore event as even bigger and better than the first.

More than 100 people packed Bernie’s Tap Room & Restaurant Monday night to hear which artists were selected to design the 10-foot fiberglass and regulation playable Gibson Les Paul guitars that are the project’s hallmark.

“It’s incredible to see how much talent we have in this area,” said Lynn Gaffey, who headed the committee that selected the artists this year.

The guitars will be unveiled at a gala on June 6th, the night before the season’s first Freeman Friday Night Live.

Many of the artists are making their second foray into the project, switching from a 10-foot to a playable guitar or vice versa.

Tom Noll, who hand-painted a guitar featuring Les Paul and several known Gibson players atop a colorful splash backdrop last year, is now paring things down to create a playable guitar.

“I’m going to do a young Les Paul with a Harley-Davidson jacket,” Noll said. “It’s all about ‘what if ?’ Like what if Les Paul had been a Harley rider? How would the bike’s sound system be different?”

Pat Mitchell is going in the other direction, switching from last year’s mosaic playable guitar to this year’s 10-foot mosaic that will feature an homage to all things Wisconsin, from sports teams to the manufacturing industry and beyond.

“I’ve lived here all my life, so if there’s one thing I know, it’s Wisconsin,” said Miller, who estimated it will take eight weeks or more to get the project finished. “The idea is to make it look like a giant tourism map.”

New this year is the addition of several student teams from schools like Carroll University, Butler Middle School and more, as well as two guitars that will be created from youth teams at La Casa de Esperanza.

La Casa President and CEO Anselmo Villarreal said he was delighted to hear from Mayor Jeff Scrima, who asked the organization to partner with GuitarTown. Villarreal said the guitars will reflect Waukesha’s Latino community.

In addition to the Waukesha School District, Carroll and La Casa, GuitarTown Steering Committee President Rick Congdon said the organization is partnering with Habitat for Humanity and the Food Pantry of Waukesha County, which will receive the funds raised by the project.

GuitarTown Steering Committee Public Relations Chairman Norm Bruce said he expects the project to be even bigger and better than last year’s.

“You really haven’t seen anything yet,” he said.

The announcement will take place during a reception at Bernie’s Tap Room & Restaurant on March 18, 2013. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

A committee headed by Lynn Gaffey, owner of the Almont Gallery and Artistic Director of the Waukesha GuitarTown Project, chose the selected artists.  Artists were required to submit a bio, portfolio and proposed conceptual ideas with selection based on artistic merit and the guidelines for public art that were provided by both Gibson Guitar Corp., and the Public Art Committee of Waukesha.
